It’s summer! For many years, I would not have ended that sentence that an exclamation point. As a kid, summer was a season of surgeries, loneliness and frustration with my disability. Going to the pool was a chore with the constant desire of my friends to get in and out. Plus, I would often cut up my feet at pools, unless I was wearing water shoes, which I found horribly ugly. Sports and outdoor activities were not my thing, especially when I was recovering from surgery. (Let’s be real though – I also don’t have a lot of physical coordination that has nothing to do with disability. Those genes went to my brothers). Usually I was counting down the days until the season was over.
Late this spring, I looked at the calendar and internally groaned as I realized summer was coming again. Then I paused and considered if summer was still my most hated season and I realized that for me now, summer represents bright colors, sunshine and smiles and laughter from my kids.
My Newfound Summer Loves
I love bright and bold colors, and there is no better time to rock them than in the summer. I keep it professional looking by pairing bright colors with black, or finding structured pieces, like blazers, in bright colors. And white! I love rocking white pants – and check out my Instagram to see the new cute white dress I have been rocking.
My favorite way to add bright colors to my look is with lipstick and nail polish. I am a big fan of bright red lips, and my favorite is Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. This color looks amazing on everyone. In summertime I like to add in other bright colors. Senegence’s LipSense is big right now, and a couple of my favorites are Purple Reign and Strawberry Shortcake.
(Note: I am not getting paid by any of these companies, but I always like to know how to execute on a look I like, so I am detailing what is working for me as inspiration to get you started).
As for polish, I am deeply in love with Essie. Every time we go to the drug store I want to buy a new color, much to my husband’s chagrin. I am wearing the shade “Come here!”, a bright orangey-pink, to kick off the month of June. For summer, I also love Fiesta and Urban Jungle.
My second summer love are the long summer days. Sunset is at 8:54 tonight! This gives me plenty of time after work to get things done. I LOVE this part of living in Utah – being farther west in the time zone means a later sun rise and sunset. I was not a fan of the 5 AM sunrise when I lived in NYC and I was bummed that it didn’t stay light until 9.
My newest summer love is that my kids love being outdoors. They are so excited to explore for a few minutes when we pick them up each evening. It works out perfectly because my parents are usually there to help supervise, which is especially important since they like to run in opposite directions. At only 18 months they can already outrun me! It reminds me that summer provides many opportunities to get out and explore.
I’m still not getting invited to many hikes or taking many trips to the pool, but I am excited about this summer. I plan on making it great by focusing on what I love about this time of year. If summer is seems like a season of exclusion to you too, reach out and let’s chat.
